Chris Staveley - Chief Executive Officer

Chief Executive Officer 

Chris graduated in Electronic Engineering at the University of Kent at Canterbury, then trained and worked as an optical design engineer at Marconi Avionics where several of his system designs were patented. His career since progressed from engineering through project and commercial management to senior management in various R&D and manufacturing companies. In 2002 Chris joined Smart Fibres where he has led the strategic development and exploitation of the Company’s technologies.

Crispin Doyle - Chief Technology Officer

Crispin is a First Class Materials Engineer. His postgraduate research and employment has focused on the development and application of optical fibre sensor technologies to industrial applications. Crispin joined Smart Fibres in 2003 where, as CTO since 2012, he takes the lead in determining the direction of technical developments, and is responsible for the advancement of technology readiness levels. 

Chris Norman - Engineering Director

Chris is a chartered engineer with 20 years’ experience of Board level management in innovative product design and development companies. Having spent 5 years as an Independent Interim Manager, Chris has an ability to quickly identify improvement needs within an organisation and implement change to address them. Chris joined Smart Fibres at the end of 2013 to lead and grow the engineering teams, improve the engineering and delivery process, and bring fresh strategic insight to the senior management team. 

Gerry Rideout - Vice President Sales & marketing

Vice President, Sales & Marketing

Gerry started his career with Baker Oil Tools in London in 1975, and held various technical, engineering, sales, marketing and management roles working in their Europe, FSU and Middle East Regions.  In 1993, Gerry joined PES (Petroleum Engineering Services) Aberdeen, being part of the original team that developed the SmartWell Completion concept and associated systems. After Halliburton purchased PES in 1999 a new Company was formed, WellDynamics, that was a joint venture between Halliburton and Shell Technology Ventures.  Gerry held various roles in this new organisation including Region Manager Europe, Africa and FSU and Vice President Executive Account Development.  In 2009 Gerry joined EXPRO AX-S (pronounced “access”) as Global Sales and Marketing Director accountable for the sales and growth of this new and revolutionary Vessel based Subsea Intervention Company.  Before joining Smart Fibres, Gerry was Business Development Manager Optimum/Advanced Completions at Weatherford International, supporting International Business Development in this arena. Gerry is an active member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), and holds an HND in Mechanical and Production engineering.

 Bill Birch - Consultant


Bill is an Incorporated Mechanical Engineer with an extensive background in R&D covering the Aluminium and Steel Industries as well as 35 years of Oil and Gas experience working for the Shell Group in exploration and production, well engineering, well servicing, testing, commercial contracting and completion operations. He has recently retired from his final position of deployment team leader for the In-Well Technology unit of Shell International B.V. having been directly involved in downhole wireless and fibre technology development. Latterly, Bill has played a key role in the introduction, development and rollout of DTS and fibre optic pressure monitoring in Brunei, DAS technology in Canada, Brunei and Oman, and trial deployments of Smart Fibres’ DPS technology in Oman. Operating as an independent Company Consultant, Bill will be helping to set Smart Fibres “go to market” oil and gas strategy, sharpen Smart Fibres’ knowledge of regional, cultural and well engineering practices and procedures, strengthen understanding of customer well and reservoir monitoring challenges, increase the customer base within Shell and ultimately further the technology uptake in other International Oil and Service Companies.

 Don Coonrod - Consultant


Don Coonrod, principal of Additive Solutions LLC, has over 30 years’ experience in the offshore exploration and production market with Sedco, Schlumberger, Transocean, and Cameron. Don brings this experience to the Smart Fibres management team to help connect our technologies to measurement and control challenges in surface and subsea drilling, production, processing and distribution operations.
